Sam Hui first picked up a DV camera in 2004 and made his first short film called “2020”, a social commentary piece on Vision 2020. “2020” later won the 1st Runner-up prize of the Justin Louis Award in the Freedom Film Festival 2004 competition. At the same year, he also received the research fellowship from Nippon Foundation under the Asian Public Intellectual program to document the “Dam Opposition Networks and Trends in Thailand and Japan”. The end product was a 30-min documentary and a written report for the Nippon Foundation archive.

In 2005, he ventured into the training and media development sector through the Southeast Asia Center for e-Media where he managed studio development and new media training for local media organisations in Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, East Timor and Mongolia.

In 2007, he joined the Convergent Media Program in Shantou University, China, to provide workshops and courses on new media tailored for journalism and communication students focusing on visual, multimedia and video productions. He involved in various extra-curricular activities such as managing the 2010 FIFA World Cup Reporting Internship program where 6 journalism students from Shantou University teaming up with 6 journalism students from Florida A&M University to produce written and video coverage of this global event in South Africa for Shawei sports portal in China.

When the Convergent Media Program shifted it’s focus to TV production and filmmaking, he makes his
production debut with “PlanetPhoto” in 2012, a travel series which he’s the associate producer and host.

He also mentored a few batches of students to create food shows and game shows on the web. He then concentrated in nurturing young filmmaking talents and also involved in the production process.

In 2016, he was the art director and visual effects artist in “Ye Duan Meng Chang”, a soft sci-fi thriller drama selected for Cannes Short Film Corner.

3 years later, he produced an award winning animated short film “Being Theo” with two talented young
directors/animators. He is also one of the music composers of the short film. “Being Theo” won the grand prize in the Xi’an Visual Arts Festival 2019 and it is in the official selection of the China International New Media Short Film Festival (CSFF) in the same year. It is also in the official selection of the Cinefondation Festival de Cannes 2020.

His passion in filmmaking led him to write and direct his debut directorial short film "Murder" in 2022 and co-directed another short film “+ve”. He’s also the editor and visual effects artist in this production. From 2023 to date, he is part of a few films and TV series in production.
